As you've probably seen, there haven't been that many posts of late. Thats because I've started a brand new show, 54 Mode! Playing the best French Touch, Nu Disco, Disco & Boogie it jumps off every Friday night 7pm GMT on 98.7FM Radio Cardiff or at Radio Cardiff. I'm sure I will return to The Block Party sooner or later but I'm really amped for this new show thats going top include specials and documentaries, Street Sounds & Shiny Disco Club record labels being the first of these. Thankyou to everyone who repped for the Block Party and hope to see you for 54 Mode. Excursion mix week this week! First of many, basically I jump outta the hip hop and devote one week to classic Soul, Funk, Disco or RnB and this week was Hip Hop soul. Call it what you will, Hip Hop Soul, Old School RnB, New Jack Swing, Ya Di Ya.... I loved this era of soul as it was so heavily emersed in hip hop before it became the absolute bull that we hear today. Check most of the tunes and you'll spot a classic break or hip hop intrumental, and there were some decent underground rhymers on them as well.

Remember The Young Black Teenagers? cos this week I dug out ‘Nobody Knows Kelli’, after listening to an old kiss show a couple of days back. I used to love that tune when it first dropped on import, but as with all hardcore hip hop teenagers I disowned it when girls in my class started saying ‘I’m into YBT, so love that Kelli Bundy tune!’hahaha. Anyhow as time passes and you don’t hear something for a while, you sometimes re-appreciate it, as was the case for me here. Fair play those boys took a shit load of stick back then, were they the new Beasties or the rap version of NKOTB blah blah blah, well calling themselves YBT wasn’t gonna give them a modest rap profile was it!? The first album was ok and had it’s moments, but the second album is so slept upon bar Tap The Bottle, which in comparison to most of the other cuts (Soul Wide Open, Blowin’ Up The Spot, Roll With The Flavor, etc…), is quite weak. In fact I’m gonna have to dig that one out to.

Here come the British! Yup, it's all about the UK this week, all that ill business born of labels like Streetsounds, Music Of Life, Kold Sweat, etc... It's not comprehensive (before I get emails saying you missed this and didn't play that!), it's just one my show features as in the future I'll be highlighting the West Coast, Females and so on. Really enjoyed this one, brought back so many memories of school and 6th Form college, so I hope you enjoy it to. As you probably already know, Guru of Gangstarr has slipped into a coma due to heart complications, so the block party sends it’s hopes and wishes to Guru’s nearest and dearest, in the hope that the big man pulls through and makes a full recovery. The tracks In support of Guru in this hard time, the gangstarr tracks I chose to playt are early numbers from the first two Gangstarr albums, first up is ‘Here’s The Proof’ from the ‘No More Mister Nice Guy’ LP and then ‘Check The Technique’ from the ‘Step In The Arena’ LP.

Thinking about Guru and Gangstarr made me remember about a few moments that, when hip hop had all but disintegrated for me in the late 90s, reminded me that there was a few sparks of hip hop hope still alive. One of those moments was when I saw Company Flow’s video to ‘End To End Burners’ which I see as pure hip hop essence. Another was when I was given a copy of Gangstarr’s ‘Moment Of Truth’ LP (funnily enough by Trevor Nelson). Anyhow, on reading the gatefold it reads ‘Gangstarr is Guru on the mic and Dj Premier on the wheels of steel’ and that to me is also pure hip hop essence. Growing up through the golden era, I never really took to all that live band business. Now I know people will slate me and cite such facts as Guru’s Jazzmatazz project, the success of The Roots and in the old school, how labels like Sugarhill brought in session players to play on early rap anthems, but it just wasn’t for me. So for that little bit of inspirational text I say, thank you Gangstarr and get well and strong Guru!

In the Live section of the show I’ve been neglecting radio freestyles over the past weeks in favour of Live performances. So this week I thought I’d pull out some absolutely wacko crazy bananas ones from classic shows on Hot 97, WKCR and Capital Radio.

ODB is first up with his usual bizarre style on a Flex show from 96, then Biz and Redman in 1990 on Stretch & Bobbito, and last but certainly not least, Flavor Flav graces Tim Westwood’s Capital Rap show solo in 1988, with some characteristically fruit loop bars, absolute class!

This week sees the debut of a brand new feature, called the ‘Excursion Mix’. Hip Hop DJs since day one have played different types of music, it was this skill that introduced ‘The Break’ in the late 70’s, check out the homage of Globe and Whiz Kid’s ‘Play That Beat’, and of course most every Hip Hop DJ since, has followed suit with the ability to turn out Funk, Disco, Reggae, Dance, Soul, etc mixes with ease. This is largely due to the individual’s love of different styles of music, or at least that’s my excuse anyway. I wanted a reason to drop some of these sets, so the new Excursion Mix feature is my opportunity to drop out of the Hip Hop for a half hour and touch on some different styles.

This week, I wasn’t straying too far from Hip Hop, so as to ease the feature in, so I pulled out some 90’s RnB with heavy hip hop flavour. Lesser known stuff like Lisette Melendez & Greg Nice’s ‘Goody Goody’ and Veronica & Craig Mack’s ‘No One But You’ appears alongside big hitters like the remix of Candy Rain by Soul 4 Real & Lost Boyz’. I gotta say, I really enjoyed putting it together and a couple of happy memories were brought to mind as I was digging out the records to, so all good. So keep it locked as I’ll be doing this each week with a different genre cut up on the Block Party!

What did radio stations do before computers!!?? I wouldn't have thought it to too much of a problem in days gone by, but in the last couple of years, taking these things for granted for playing sweepers, trails and the like has become all to apparent. The playout system at the station has died, and reverted all shows back to pirate radio mode, fiddling madly about with mini discs and cds. Quite funny really, seeing meer-kat style reactions by everybody in station to all that dead air. Anyhow like a true pro I soldiered on and dropped this weeks show with all the ususal stuff, The Vault, Live section and Mix.

I must say a belated shout to New Jersey Flavor Unit Rhymer, Apache's family and friends on his untimely passing, the block party sends our deepest sympathies, very sad, so we're dropping the duet with Lakim Shabazz 'Passin' The Mic' as a tribute!

Over the last two shows in ‘The Vault’ feature of the show I’ve done a kind of before they were famous thing. Last week it was Public Enemy as Spectrum City with ‘Lies’, this week it’s the turn of Kid and Play. Before the high-tops, dance moves and movies they were known as the Fresh Force Crew. Christopher Martin and Christopher Reid came with a 1986 cut on Sutra called ‘Rock Me’, chopping up Falco’s dodgy number ‘Amadeus’.

First heard this joint on a Mr Magic show with Marley on the two copies, loved it ever since, so I thought I’d play this week. Oh, the other reason was that I was reminded of it when watching a well dodgy low buget production on the Horror Channel of War Of The Worlds 2, starring guess who? That’s right, the higher of the two high-tops Christopher Reid, looks a bit different now though!

I’m a massive fan of Ice-T, period! The man repped LA since day one, did the independent thing way before anyone else, took on KJLH (you’re just a bunch of punk bourgeois black suckers!) the LAPD (the beef with Darryl Gates is legendary) and of course Warner Bros. (Charlton Heston bite me!). So as an older B-Boy, when I was in school I'd never thought that this show:

would have had this guy:

on it, but there he and Coco (his now wife) was, schmoozing with Phil and Fern on UK TV show Mr & Mrs, so funny (couldn't find a pic though). I remember when we were lucky to catch a glimpse of Ice on Behind The Beat from BBC2’s Def II, and now here he is on sickly sweet prime time Saturday night ITV, but we’ll let him off cos it was for charity, good on ya Ice!
So in celebration of this, I kicked this week’s show off with Ice’s contribution to the Rhyme Syndicate album Comin’ Through, which is actually the title track. I love this album not only cos of the High School memories, but I unearthed a Capital Rap Show with Ice-T and Evil E being interviewed by Westwood. In the interview Ice tells of how he, Donald D, Low Profile (WC & The Maad Circle), Everlast, etc were looking for that elusive deal and Ice got it first but came back to put the others on, it’s the stuff of hood heroes! So here’s this week’s show kicked off by the O.G.
